Explanation of this subgroup
Please note that all references to the old terminology for this group have been changed here to
say G2a.  Some other locations on the Internet may still use the old term, G2.

This subgroup is an integral part of Group 2.  They are listed separately here because they all
share a relatively recent male ancestor.  See the description for the main Group 2 section for
more details about the group.

The small number of samples available here make any conclusions on origins very tentative.
One man lists French origins, and the remaining names seem to relate to English origins.   While
Bailey can be a Celtic-origin name, it is also associated with the Norman French, from the French
verb bailler.  The surname Bayless also has a similar dual origin, with the Old French, bailis, providing
the name.

Thus a French origin for the entire subgroup is possible.

Little information is available about the G status of the men in this subgroup  Although none of
the men in this group seems to have participated in the Garvey & associates project to find new
subcategories of G, it is likely all these men have the newly discovered U8 mutation, but lack
U1, U13 and U16.   When these new mutations are officially categorized, this combination of findings
may be designated G2a3*.

Persons probably belonging to this subgroup    July 2007 update
............confirmed members with 37 markers listed on the graph above are in bold
.....................those with fewer than 37 markers who only seem to belong to the clade are in plain type

who list origins in England
Bailey # 4  X4G8Y in Y-Search.  Apparently not in G Project.  Unclear whether confirmed or
               predicted as G.
He shares a common ancestor within 1000 yrs with Bayless # 3 and Bryant (both English),
              Bayless # 4 (French) and 4 Americans, Bailey # 6, Renibe/Carter, Ridley/Bailey # 1 & # 2.
Bayless # 3   93H5C in Y-Search.  Apparently not in G Project.  Unclear whether confirmed or
predicted as G.  He shares a common ancestor within 1000 yrs. with Bailey # 4
              and Bryant (both English), Bayless # 4 (French) and 3 Americans, Ridley/Bailey # 1 & # 2 and
Bailey # 6.  There is some proabability that the Bayles sample in Sorenson database is also
closely related, but not enough markers are available for this comparison.
Bryant  ETK6F in Y-Search.  Apparently not in G Project.  Unclear whether confirmed or predicted
as G.  He shares a common ancestor with in 1000 yrs. with  Bailey # 4 and Bayless # 3
              (both English), Bayless # 4 (French) and 3 Americans, Ridley/Bailey # 1 & # 2 and Bailey # 6.

who list origins in France
Bayless # 4   2ZT5X in Y-Search.  Apparently not in G Project.  Unclear whether predicted or
confirmed as G.  He shares a common ancestor with in 1000 yrs. with  Bailey # 4, Bayless # 3
              and Bryant (all English), and 3 Americans, Ridley/Bailey # 1 & # 2 and Bailey # 6.
This Bayless # 4 sample is from an American who lists French origins, but provided info
only for an American ancestor.  There is also some probability that the Bayles sample in
the Sorenson database is also closely related, but not enough markers are available for
              a reliable comparison.

who have origins in Old World or unlisted origins
Renibe/Carter  K84DE in Y-Search.  Apparently not in G Project.  Unclear whether predicted or
confirmed as G.  He shares a common ancestor within 1000 yrs with Bayless # 3,
Bailey # 4  and Bryant (all English), Bayless # 4 (French), and 3 Americans, Ridley/Bailey
                # 1 & # 2 and Bailey # 6.
Bailey # 6  KTCGF in Y-Search.  Apparently not in G Project.  Unclear whether confirmed or
predicted as G.  He shares a common ancestor within 1000 yrs. with Bailey # 4, Bayless # 3
              and Bryant (all English), Bayless # 4 (French) and 2 Americans, Ridley/Bailey # 1 & # 2
 Ridley/Bailey # 1  CF99Y in Y-Search.  Apparently not in G Project.
 Ridley/Bailey # 2  FHDYF in Y-Search.  Apparently not in G Project.
It is unclear for both these men whether confirmed or predicted as G.  Because one listed
himself as G2*, it is likely he was found G2a, but negative for G2a1 and G2a2.
They share a common ancestor within 1000 yrs. with Bailey # 4, Bayless # 3
and Bryant (all English), Bayless # 4 (French) and and American, Bailey # 6.
The Ridley Bailey results are recently available and were not included on the diagram above.
