                              DNA Results and Groupings

                                  The G2a Clade with Duplicated Values for DYS19


For sure, all the men here are descended from a man who developed a second component of the
DYS19 marker.  Not enough is known of this second component to determine how likely it is to
change to another value as the first component is likely to do so.  It is unclear why several persons who
are clearly closely related to men with duplicated DYS19 only have a single value.  It is possible in some cases
the result was reported before labs began reporting duplicated values.

All the men on this page are G2a.   This means they will be positive in special SNP testing for general G (M201)
and G2 (P287) and G2a (P15).    Several members have been found negative for the G2a1 and G2a2
subgroups and G2a3 alone.   Hutchison has tested negative for all four subgroups.  However, one group of men
with duplicated DYS19 was found L91+.  So some men below may also be L91+

In addition one man below  tested positive for three new unnamed SNPs which will be found among
double DYS19 men as follows: rs13304806, rs810814 and rs810811.  These may belong only
to this man's family or they man represent important new subcategories.  Only additional testing will
determine the significance of these.

The Muniz entry at Y-Search indicates he belongs to haplogroup M1.  This is apparently a
typographical error.  The Family Tree DNA records do not show any testing for haplogroups for
him at that lab.  Nolen's first DYS385 value has to be ignored in comparisons because an ancestor apparently
underwent a mutation of mulriple values which was in effect a single mutation.  Most software 
will erroneously count this as multiple mutations.  However, there are problems with this sample --
even ignoring that one mutation.  In the phylogenetic diagrams he and Villoni share a branch with an
adjacent group that lacks the double DYS19 feature rather than with the double DYS19 group.
Presumably the double DYS19 is more important in determining the common ancestor.

et al., "Extended Y Chromosome Haplotypes Resolve Multiple and Unique Lineages of the Jewish
Priesthood," Human Genetics, 8 Aug 2009, E-pub ahead of print.  

Research Study 3's skeleton has some potential to explain origins because it is over 1300 yrs old.  However,
it is just another mystery.  The duplicated DYS19 argues that it belongs on this page.  But it is not
a close match to anyone.  And it has the uncommon value of 13 for DYS388 which is seldom seen
outside the DYS388=13 (G2a3b1*) group.  And the DYS446 value over 20 is also seldom seen outisde
the DYS388=13 group. The sample thus seems to have features that could be arguably make it
part of either group.  Though the DYS19 values would have changed, it seems overall closest to
Stepp and is listed with him below.

The Creamer sample clusters with Peyton and Ray on the phylogenetic network though he has
only one value for DYS19 and despite the very odd value of his DYS388.  The lab
rechecked Creamer's DYS19 and was unable to find but one DYS19 value.  Because of his
clustering with duplicated DYS19 men on the phylogenetic network, his sample is placed on this page.
It is possible that one of his ancestors mutated to 15+15 and that would be read simply as 15 by
the lab.

The YHRD database is a collection of samples submitted by scientists worldwide.

Any italicized DYS426 value is only predicted, by virtually all G persons have the same value.


Recommended additional deep ancestry testing for men here with the interest and funds for this:

Because there are so few G2a*samples, upgrade to Family Tree DNA's 67 markers is always very useful in
determining proper relationships and for time calculations to common ancestors.  For deep ancestry purposes
only one person within a surname project needs the full 67 markers.  Additional testing within surname projects
might be indicated for more recent comparisons.

At Family Tree DNA for those tested there, in the haplotree section of a G2a* person's results page is listed 
also a deep clade test if he had not already been tested for all the G2a subgroups.  Presently, this will allow
testing of three of the four subgroups.  [And one of these was only recently added.  So it is very uncommon
now in April 2009 for anyone to have been tested for all four subgroups.]  The SNP for the fourth subgroup
was made available only days ago.  As of this writing only one man on this page has been tested for even
two of the four G2a categories.

So for complete testing one has first to order the deep clade test.  Then one would go to the Order Tests section
of the same results page.  There in the advanced tests section one will find toward the bottom in the G
section the SNP test L91 for $29US.   L91 is the SNP test for the G2a4 subcategory.  It is likely that L91
will be added in the future to the deep clade test.  It would then be less expensive overall to test for all
four categories. 

The deep clade test will check automatically for all presently known additional SNP categories relevant
to the men here if the person belongs to G2a1, G2a2 or G2a3.  G2a4 has no subcategories.  It is also
possible that one will be found truly negative for all G2a subgroups and thus just G2a*
