Medicine Clerkships for 4th Year Students at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center

Elective clerkships for 4th year (Senior) medical students are offered by the Department of Medicine and the UCLA School of Medicine. UCLA students have first priority for these clerkships, and use a computerized scheduling system by the end of May for the academic year beginning in July. When space is available after that time, students in good standing from other medical schools may apply.

Students may apply by contacting the Course Director/Course Coordinator for the clerkship as shown in the table below or at the UCLA School of Medicine webpage (see below). You should find out first if space is available, then obtain an application from the UCLA School of Medicine Student Affairs Office or http://www.medstudent.ucla.edu/visitingstudents

Follow all instructions for applying very carefully, and send the application to the Course Director. You must include alternate choices for clerkships and dates. If space is available, your completed application and supporting material will be forwarded to the Department of Medicine, then to the Medical Director's office, then to the UCLA Student Affairs Office.

Your application is not final until all of these offices have approved it. You are responsible for completing the application and forwarding all material requested (fee, transcript, letter of recommendation, evidence of health insurance and malpractice insurance, and other required material) at least six weeks before the clerkship begins.

All of these courses are three weeks long and are available to students from other medical schools on a space available basis. Although the starting dates are based on the UCLA School of Medicine calendar, most clerkships are able to accommodate slight differences in starting and ending dates. Note that non-UCLA students are limited to a total of 9 weeks of UCLA-sponsored clerkships (at any UCLA hospital).

For additional information, contact the UCLA Student Affairs Office (310-825-7006) or Kathleen McGinley (Harbor-UCLA Department of Medicine, 310-222-2409).  A very useful source of information is:   http://www.medstudent.ucla.edu/visitingstudents.
