"AN EARLY EYE OPENER"
I was just a little tot in 1933
when I was scooping pecans up
beneath a neighbor's tree.
It was to be a frightful thing,
the worst I ever saw,
for what appeared is what I feared,
were agents of the law!
A cloudy gust of wind and dust
brought them to the scene,
their sirens on with deafening tone,
their lights were on high beam!
I was so scared
I never dared
to move a single limb,
for now I thought
that I'd been caught
in my atrocious sin.
It's a guilty thing
that fear can bring
but also bring respect,
was when I saw the mighty law
on-rushing to inspect!
And in their flee when reaching me,
kept going right on by.....
into the house to aid a spouse
whose husband went awry.
Now from my fright to much delight
I learned a lesson strong.
From deep inside I now describe
there's guilt in doing wrong,
and from the pose from whence I froze
I quickly slipped away,
age six or so I came to know...
that crime will never pay!
