The Flailer
This flailer design is based on the design on Al's Halloween Page . Mine has been modified so that in the resting position the arm is laying flat instead of at a right angle.
Parts List
- pnuematic cylinder(screen door closer)
- needle valve
- 1/4 in tubing
- 3/8 in tubing
- rope or cable
- eye hooks
- 12v dc 120v ac switched relay
- 2 solenoid valves
- plywood
- 2x4
- hinge
- spring
Ok I am really bad at writing instructions but here it goes. Look at the pictures to get a better idea. Take the plywood and cut in to the shape of the top half of a body. I opted to not cut out the second arm. now cut the arm in half and attached the two pieces together with the hinge. Now attach the cylinder to the plywood (I used zip ties) with the buisness end pointing away from the arm part. Put the eye hook in the arm to guide the rope(See pics for placement). Attach the rope to the cylinder and the other end to the far end of the arm. Attach the spring under the break in the arm so that if you bend it at the hinge it will be pulled back flat. The tubing needs to be connected to the cylinder and then split with a T to each of the solenoids. Depending on the solenoids you get you may need different connectors. I got all mine at Home Depot. On the other end of one solenoid attach a quick connect for the compressor. On the other solenoid leave the other opening with nothing attached. Attach both solenoids to opposite sides of the relay so that when one is on the other is off and vice versa. Hook the 12v dc on the relay to a momentary switch and to a 12v power supply. When you press the switch it should let air into the system causing the cylinder to pull the arm up. Then when you release the button the other solenoid will open letting the air out of the system and the arm back down. Check out the pictures for clarification.
