                                                            Haplogroup G Project
                              DNA Results and Groupings

G2a subgroup genetically nearest? to G2a2 persons

The men on this page who do not have the same surname are not closely related.  What they
do have in common is they are nearest genetically to the subgroup that is G2a2.

The G2a status means G2a men will be positive in special SNP testing for general G (M201)
and G2 (P287) and G2a (P15).   Roberts and Poggi who represent variant profiles were similarly
found negative for G2a1, G2a2 and the major subgroups of G2a3.  Roberts's first 12 markers give
the impression he belongs to one of the G2a3 subgroups, but the other markers make it clear he is not
their close kin.  Owens has the only sample found P15+ (G2a) but negative for L30 (G2a3).
There is a possibility that some or many of the men on this page may be positive for the
newly identified SNP, L91 (G2a4), but this will not be known for sure until further testing is
done.

A few of the men here are shown as Ashkenazi Jewish, and they are shown related closely
to additional anoynmous G Ashkenazi men from Poland and other parts of northeastern Europe.
In addition, the Poggi sample matches 11 of 12 markers to an anonynous G person from
Urmia, Iran.

Actually none of these samples is a contender -- based on marker values -- for G2a1 or
G2a2.  The real question to make sure they are all indeed negative for L30 (G2a3)

The diagrams produced by special DNA software by Fluxus -- using 67-marker samples --
aggregate together fairly accurately those belonging to the same subhaplogroup.  On such diagrams,
men listed below with 67 markers initially appeared near to the men determined to be G2a2 but did
not cluster with them.  Since then, they have tended to move around the diagram.

The Sardinian samples are placed here because this is the closest G group among those so far
identified.  They may deserve their own grouping, but too little information is currently available.
The most common one shown below is found as multiple samples in the central highlands.  This
area is thought to have been immune from gene inflow during the historical period and the present
population is descended from neolithic settlements.  Research study is Daniela Contu et al.,
"Y-Chromosome Based Evidence for Pre-Neolithic Origin of the Genetically Homogeneous
but Diverse Sardinian Population: Inference for Association Scans." PLoSONE, 2008, vol 3(1),
on-line publication.  And Research Study2 is Andrea Verzeletti et al., "Population Data for 15
Autosomal STRs loci and 12 Y Chromosome STRs Loci in a Population Sample from the
Sardinia Island (Italy)," Legal Medicine, 2008, article in press.

For information on what is known of the origins of this grouping here and migrations and time
relationships to other G groupings link to the migration-time page.

The YHRD samples are from the YHRD database, a collection of samples submitted by
scientists worldwide.

When the value for DYS426 appears in italics it is only predicted.  Virtually all G persons have
the same value for this marker.

Recommended additional deep ancestry testing for men here with the interest and funds for this:

Because there are so few G2a*samples, upgrade to Family Tree DNA's 67 markers is always very useful in
determining proper relationships and for time calculations to common ancestors.  For deep ancestry purposes
only one person within a surname project needs the full 67 markers.  Additional testing within surname projects
might be indicated for more recent comparisons.

At Family Tree DNA for those tested there, in the haplotree section of a G2a* person's results page is listed
also a deep clade test if he had not already been tested for all the G2a subgroups.  Presently, this will allow
testing of three of the four subgroups.  [And one of these was only recently added.  So it is very uncommon
now in April 2009 for anyone to have been tested for all four subgroups.]  The SNP for the fourth subgroup
was made available only days ago.

So for complete testing one has first to order the deep clade test.  Then one would go to the Order Tests section
of the same results page.  There in the advanced tests section one will find at the top of the SNP list
the SNP test L91 for $29US.   L91 is the SNP test for the G2a4 subcategory.  It is likely that L91
will be added in the future to the deep clade test.  It would then be less expensive overall to test for all
four categories.  It is likely, however, that many of the persons on this page are indeed G2a4, and one
can save money for now just ordering L91.  There is always the risk though that one will be negative for
L91.

The deep clade test will check automatically for all presently known additional SNP categories relevant
to the men here if the person belongs to G2a1, G2a2 or G2a3.  G2a4 has no subcategories.  It is also
possible that one will be found truly negative for all G2a subgroups and thus just G2a*
