TRANSFORMATIONAL LEADERSHIP

The Transformational Leader is the rare one who awakens within followers a desire to live in a better society one more open, decent, and caring.  People have those instincts within them.  They have the "better angels" in their nature, as Lincoln said - but they're dormant.

GLOBALIZATION AND THE EXTENDED FAMILY OF IT CAREERS

Some research exists about the need for traditional types of IT professionals and technicians such as database managers, network administrators, systems analysts, programmers, etc.  In addition, E-Commerce (EC) and E-Business (EB) careers are maturing siblings in an extended family of IT roles such as Chief Information Officer (CIO) and Knowledge Manager (KM).

A good source of information about EC-EB, CIO, and KM roles is advertisements in classified sections of papers, Journals and at Web sites.  An article In the World Trade magazine in October i998 listed the top 100 high tech U.S. exporters.

PowerQuest was the fastest growing high tech exporter and at the time of writing this section of this newsletter listed Chief Information Officer (CIO), Senior Software Engineer, and Global Web Master Jobs.

Arterial Vascular Engineering, Inc., is a gold mine of good information.  AVEI is the world's leading medical technology company providing lifelong solutions for people with chronic diseases.  "About Medtonic" provides a vision and business overview.  Job opportunities at the time of this writing: Lead e-Business Developer, IT Director, Commercialization Director - E-COM, e-Business Developer.  Analyze the vision and business overview.  Then, analyze the job openings.  Then, think about the competencies and skills that will be required for B2B between Asia Pacific countries and the U.S.

ETEC was fourth in high tech exporting with openings for an Information Technology Executive Assistant in Hayward, CA and an Information Systems Engineer in Tuscon, AZ.  Analyze corporate Web pages and offices in Korea, Japan, and Taiwan plus "College Recruiting."

Centocor provides information about "What is Biotechnology" and then provides position descriptions for Lead Systems Analyst, Lead Clinical Data Analyst, Manager of Clinical Database Development, Director of Strategic Marketing, etc.

INCREASING MENTAL BANDWIDTH TO MATCH
TECHNOLOGICAL BANDWIDTH

The Federal Laboratory Consortium for Technology Transfer (FLC) was organized in 1974 and formally chartered by the Federal Technology Transfer Act of 1986 to promote and strengthen technology transfer nationwide.  More than 700 major federal centers and laboratories advance research and technology for new products and services that must become curriculum at different levels in education and training. NEWSLINK ' contains a great deal of information about the FLC.  The March 2000 issue is on BIOTECHNOLOGY and the April 2000 issue will be on Assistive Technology and Law Enforcement.

RESEARCH QUESTIONS

How are establishments in "goods and services" sectors of the economy affected by globalization and the transition from paper to electronic formats for conducting business?

What competencies and skills ' are required for Information
Technology (IT) and extended family careers in E-Commerce,
Chief Information Officer (CIO) and Knowledge Manager (KM)?

What K-Lifelong Learning career pathways must be created for culturally diverse learners to prepare techforces with a basic foundation in IT for learning and living and with. above-mentioned specializations for a region of the world and a concentration in goods or services economy sectors?

CIOs AND KMs FOR EDUCATION AND TRAINING

CIOs access, analyze, and redistribute information.  KMs assess and critique the information, facilitate processes to determine the "fit" of information to goals and objectives.  An American Association for the Advancement of Science study concluded that many middle grades science books were "Heavy Texts Light on Learning." How can CIOs and KM collaborate with educators in middle schools to improve in science?  How can teacher education prepare CIOs and KMs? (See p. 3).

FASTEST GROWING E-BUSINESSES

A number of research reports are appearing about e-Business growth such as one conducted by Norvell's U.K. offices working with the London School of Economics (LSE) that has four sections: comment, analysis, case studies and credits.  U.S. firms account for most of top scorers in the survey, but U.K. supermarket leader Tesco is the overall winner.

CEOs and E-BUSINESS

PrlcewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) surveyed 1,000+ CEOs worldwide to measure their attitudes toward business.  One finding was the optimism of CEOs for the business prospects of their companies over the next three years.  "The study found that the level of optimism may be linked to expectations of future e-business revenues." But, over 60 percent believe the primary function of the company's Web site Is to build corporate awareness, or advertise products or services.  The transformation of businesses will become more apparent in applications for m-commerce (mobile e-commerce).

CIOs, KMs, and IT INDUSTRY EVOLUTION

CIOs and KMs are critical now and will become essential in the future as business evolves toward 24x7x365 full service wireless B2B strategies.  How will the IT industry evolve.  Moschella described the IT evolution from systems- and PC-centric environments to a network-centric environment as a prelude to the content-centric environment.  How can education at various levels create career paths to prepare professional and technical workforces in sectors of the economy?  How do we prepare CIOs and KMs for a continuous flow of content via ELECTRONIC NEWSLETTERS?  How can teams of CIOs - KMs in area businesses collaborate with educators at various levels to interpret the IT evolution for economy sectors and convert their understandings into learning units for use In AAL and campus based traditional formats?

FORWARD THINKING: MAKING THE BROADBAND CONNECTION

"FAST CONNECTIONS - cable modems and DSL lines - are today's hottest electronic "must-have" services.  Having this technology isn't just a matter of being able to surf faster.  Broadband connections change the basic way you use the Internet.  As our cover story on page 164 explains, with a broadband connection many common tasks change from being interesting technical demonstrations to realistic ways of working.  Web cameras, videoconferencing, voice communications, and virtual private networks work better.

TECHNOLOGY is changing every business: that much is obvious.  But despite years of talking about the changes, we still haven't done nearly enough to use technology to change education, particularly in high schools."

Miller, Michael J. "FORWARD THINKING." PC Magazine 12<8), April 18, 2000, 7-8.
