Nagy/Brecz Family ---Ships Manifest Records

The following are Ellis Island Manifest Records for the Nagy/Brec branch of the family. They are sorted by entry date, the earliest being reported first.

James (Imri) Nagy----Entry  November 29, 1900
SHIP SS WEIMAR, Sailed from Bremen, Germany
Arrived at Ellis Island, New York, 11/29/1900
#29 on the ships manifest

James Nagy was 31 years old, & married. He could read and write.
He was Hungarian, His last residence was Lablancza or Sablancza
He had a ticket to his final destination, Eleanor Pennsylvania.
He paid his on passage, and had $15.
James had been in the country before, the writing was blurred,
The best guess on the date is 1881.location Eleanor Pennsylvania.
He was not going to meet any relative.

On the Soundex Index Card reporting James (Imre) Nagy’s
location in the Manifest, a different story unfolds.
His wife’s name is listed as Susanna, Her age was 33,
She is in Cleveland Ohio.
The address is 179 Frederick (numbers were clear but
the street name was not)

James name is listed as Imre Nagy -- Roll 162, 266.

It is possible that his destination, Eleanor Pa was the first stop
on his trip to Cleveland, Ohio. He was in the country before
and listed a wife in Cleveland Ohio .  Some of the soundex cards
reported information that was supplied at the point of departure.
This would be one explanation for the additional information
not recorded on the ships manifest.
Also of interest, Great grandfather, John Nagy, entering the USA on 3/31/1900, listed Imre (James) Nagy of Cleveland Ohio, as his brother                                                                                                                         ...

Mary was 5’7" tall, Fair complexion, brown hair and eyes.
Nearest friend or relative left in Hungary was,
    her mother, Julia Nagy.

We believe that Mary was detained because she was a young woman traveling without a male companion. On the manifest, line #13 we see an Anna Banyasz, Anna is also from Szikszo. On the manifest, there was an ‘x’ by both of their names.

On the Record of Aliens held for Special Inquiry:

Line #16 Anna Banyasz is listed as traveling with a female under 16.
They were detained because of one person under 16.

Officer Macatee
was the officer, and he detained them at
2:20 pm on 8/30 (?) then on 9/14/ at 11:32, they were admitted.
They had breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

(I think the dates are an error that was made when the final information was entered on the Record of Aliens information. It is known that these records were sometimes updated quite awhile after the actual release of the detainees.)                                                                                ..
