Course Evaluation
MONITORING READING PROGRESS: The Gates-MacGinitie Reading Test, 4 th edition, levels 7-9 and 10-12, will be used to monitor students’ progress toward grade level reading comprehension and to place them in appropriately challenging materials. Students will be tested during the first weeks of school and again at the end of each quarter. Twenty-five percent of each student’s quarterly grade for this course is based on the progress demonstrated by this test; to earn an A in Reading Progress, a student must achieve comprehension scores on this test that show the student is reading at or above his or her current grade level.
PROGRESS REPORTS: I enter grades into the computer approximately every two weeks and send a mid-quarter progress report home with EVERY student EVERY quarter. I will also send interim progress reports home anytime a student’s average has either slipped below a C or has shown significant improvement. If you would like bi-monthly progress reports (@every other week), please send me some self-addressed, stamped envelopes so I can send one to you every time I enter grades (@10 times per semester). When you get this report, you can identify any problem areas and discuss with your child ways to make improvements.
GRADING SCALE: I group grades into categories and use a weighted scale for each category when calculating student grades. This means the students must participate in all categories of evaluation in order to be successful in this class. The categories and their weights are listed below.
Opening lessons/Warm-ups 05%
Class work/participation 20%
SSR (Sustained Silent Reading) 10%
READ180 10%
Notebooks 10%
Tests 10%
Homework 10%
Progress 25%
Total - 100%
HOMEWORK GRADING RUBRICS: I use a rubric system for grading homework. Rubrics show students what they are expected to do for each assignment and the minimum requirements for each passing grade A-D. I make this information available to parents so that they can check their child’s work BEFORE it is in and suggest improvements as needed. Below are links to the same rubrics I use for each kind of assignment.
