TATTING WORKSHOP--instructor:  Karen Bovard

The skill level for the tatting workshop will be aimed at the tatter who is comfortable in the basics of tatting (double stitch to make rings, chains, picots, and joins).  All other techniques will be taught.

The basic design premise is based upon making a uniquely tatted chatelaine body...either neck hung or a smaller waist-hung appendage.  The design for the body utilizes 4 shuttles tatted continuously using padded split ring technique.  You will need to bring 4 shuttles wound in Size 10 or 20 thread in two different colors.  the two colors will be used in the design and so the colors should be either contrasting (eg. white and black, orange and blue) or coordinating (eg. light and dark shades of the same color).

The rest of the class will be playing around with tatting techniques to create straight chains that will be used as 'attachment chains' that can be used to attach your favorite tools to your chatelaine on a non-permanent basis.  We will be exploring many versions of Pearl Tatting, Node Stitch Tatting, Zig-Zag Tatting, and Inside-Stitch Tatting.  Then we will take the individual stitch techniques and learn how to manipulate them to create new and innovative forms.  Karen will also introduce you to hybrid combinations of the stitches to create truly unique patterns.  Karen guarantees that there will be something new for even the most experienced tatter.

Sunday afternoon we will shift from workshop mode and have fun with tatting.  This year again we will have fun with a tat-off.  You may participate only if you want to.   There will be three different forms.

A.     Traditional Tat-Off:  You will be given a tatting pattern on Saturday that you can practice and learn.  You choose your favorite shuttle, tools, and thread.  Everyone will have the same amount of time to see how many repeats they can make.

B.     No-Picture Tatting:  You will be given a written pattern without a picture to tat in a certain amount of time.  This will test your pattern-reading skills.

C.     Synchronized Tat-Off:  You will be randomly paired with other tatter to tat one project together.  This promises to be a lot of fun!

We will also have fun with "Adventures in 3-D Tatting".  Bring your tatting leftovers and failures to the workshop.  Jennifer Bartling will give you inspiration to turn them into miniature works of art.  We will be playing with changing our tatting from flat (2-D) to fun 3-D  tatting.

As an added bonus, Jennifer will show you a unique way to use tatting in other fibers art forms.   Bring some variegated thread or yarn & appropriate tatting shuttle/needle (any size you like to work with).

BOBBIN lACE WORKSHOP CLASSES

This year we will be offering two different bobbin lace classes based up the level of bobbin lace that the individual is comfortable with.

CZECH LACE CLASS--Instructor:  Katarina Medelska

Katerina Medelska is from Vamberk, Czech Republic where she learned her lacemaking skills.  Students will be creating a 3” by 4” piece of lace with a traveling tape lace that surrounds the letter “L” shape.  You will also learn 2 different styles of leaves as decorative elements.  The edge will feature braids and picots.  As a bonus, Katarina will demonstrate how to handle the bobbins ‘in hand’ though she wants to point out that you should not expect to work the project this way.

Appropriate Student Skill Level:  Intermediate to advanced lacemakers---1 to 2 years of lacemaking experience—comfortable in basic tape lace techniques of cloth stitch, half stitch, braids, leaves, and picots.

CONTINUING BEGINNER TORCHON BOBBIN LACE--Instructor:  Susan Groh

Since you know a ‘cross’ from a ‘twist’, this is the next class for you.  It’s a technique class.  Let veteran lacemaker and teacher, Susan Groh, from Kansas City area teach you tips an tricks covering different ways to sart and finish you lace whither it be a square, circle, rectangle or an edging.  Susan will discuss various patterns covering starts, forside, headside, picots, roseground, spiders, and finishes.  After this brief lecture, you will start a lace project using magic threads.  Feel free to bring any troublesome prickings to be discussed in class.

Appropriate Student Skill Level:  Beginner lacemaker---less than 1-2 years experience.   This class is designed for two different types of bobbin lacers:  for those who have not laced for awhile and need a refresher to ‘get back’ to bobbin lace.   It is also a great class for novice bobbin lacers to relearn the basics of Torchon Lace from an experienced teacher for a new perspective on the technique.

You will receive details of class supplies: thread type and size, number of bobbins to bring either with your confirmation letter or thereafter.

Pictures of projects,  maps, and other information will be posted to this website as they become available.
