                              DNA Results and Groupings

                                                      G2a3b1 individuals (DYS388=13) 
                                           on genetic branch 1A
                                               with DYS594=11 

The genetic branch 1A listed here is a name chosen to represent samples found along a branch of
a phylogenetic tree as created by special DNA software from Fluxus.  The relationships shown on
the Fluxus network diagram are based on the various marker values of 67-marker samples with special
weighting given to the slower-mutating markers.  Those persons in branch 1A will have unusually close
relationships with persons from other branches designated as 1, such as 1B.  The availability of 
additional samples may require renaming the branches, but persons closely related here will likely continue
clustering in future versions of the phylogenetic diagram.  Less closely related persons will tend to
move, and thus some caution has to be used in thinking of the branch listed here as anything more than
a helpful, but imperfect, way to try to subgroup G2a3b1 persons.  Inclusion of samples with less than
67 markers on this page is based partially on guesswork, especially with regard to 12-marker samples.

The G2a3b1 status means the men will be positive in special SNP testing for general G (M201)
and G2 (P287) and G2a (P15) and for G2a3 (U8 or S126 or L30) and for G2a3b (L141) and for
G2a3b1 (P303)

The status of the men here with regard to the three subgroups of G2a3b1 is mixed.  Earlier testing showed
that men within the DYS388= 13 group are negative for U1 (G2a3b1a)  Four of the men below (Williams,
Bird, Mecca & Canniff) were found negative for L42 (G2a3b1b).  Presently it is unknown whether any of the
men below are positive for L139 (G2a3b1c)  Being negative for all three subgroups would constitute a
group all to itself and designated as G2a3b1*.

For information on what is known of the origins of the overall DYS388=13 group and migrations and time
relationships to other G groupings link to the migration-time page .

The mutation of DYS594 to 11 within this DYS388=13 group occurred probably sometime in the
 Middle Ages in a single ancestor who was the ancestral grandfather of everyone on this page.  From the
geographical distribution of samples, this ancestor would seem to have lived in western Europe.  This
11 value is found in a few other DSY388=13 persons but they have enough divergent values from the
men below that it is clear they are not part of the group below.

Several features of the geographical distribution of the samples in this clade are noted.  First, there are
an unusually large number of Welsh names, with most of these men reporting reliable ancestry only to
the southern coastal areas of the United States.  Those in the British Isles trace only to English and
Welsh areas, not Scotland or Ireland.  To date, there are only a few men in this clade with origins reported in
continental Europe.  

No patterns are seen among the slower mutating markers below in the results section.  If shared by
multiple persons, this pattern would form the basis of a subclade.  Solitary marker oddities are shown
in contrasting color below just in case other samples with similar values come to light.  Sorting the data
according to the fast-mutating marker results would not offer any useful information here.  The Delong
sample may or may not have developed the DYS594 mutation depending on when the common ancestor
with the others lived.  The Fluxus software indicates they are closest to the people on this page, but their 
genetic distance is about the same with persons outside this DYS594 group.

One of the Haneys below was reported P15- by the lab, but this is clearly nonsense because multiple
closely related men are are all P15+.


Recommended additional deep ancestry testing for men here with the interest and funds for this:

Upgrading to 67 markers for deep ancestry purposes can be useful in helping to better establish
relationships and time calculations to a common ancestor.  However, we now have a large number of
DYS388= 13 samples, and the full 67 markers seem to serve no specific use for deep
ancestry subgrouping here.  However, the additional markers may be useful within a surname project in
establishing family branches.

By exception the DYS594 value of 11 which characterizes the men here is needed to determine
membership in this group.  If one's first 37 markers show only a few number variations from someone proven
to be DYS594=11, ordering the DYS594 marker is not necessary.  DYS594 can be ordered separately
at Family Tree DNA for much less than a full 67 marker upgrade.  It can be found in the Order Tests
section of the individual results page as an advanced test.

All tested persons in the DYS388=13 group have tested positive for the P303 SNP which characterizes G2a3b1.
The outcome of such testing for all the samples listed below is very predictable as P303+ and testing, in my
opinion, unnecessary.   SNP testing can be ordered as what is called the deep clade SNP test in the
haplotree section of the individual Family Tree DNA results page.  P303 (G2a3b1) is included in this deep
clade test. 

There is no hint that DYS594= 11 persons are positive for U1, which characterizes a subgroup
of P303 (G2a3b1a).   In earlier testing DYS388=13 samples are negative for U1.  There is equally no hint that
DYS594= 11 persons are positive for another subgroup of P303 characterized by being positive for L42 or S146
(G2a3b1b).  Little is known of the coverage of L139 (G2a3b1c) and confirmation that it occurs within DYS388=13
persons would be desirable before additional persons test for this.   These SNPs can be ordered on the Family
Tree DNA results page in the Order Tests section as an advanced test.  They will be found at the top of the SNP 
list for $29US each.  These tests will eventually be added to the G deep clade test.  Only one person from a
surname group needs to test for SNPs as everyone else in the surname group will have the same findings.
