| U.S. 64-A promoted to the big leagues | ||||
| The route: | The 1st US 64-A appeared in 1940. It ran from US 64 Bat Cave east as a multiplex with US 74 through Lake Lure to Rutherfordton, then headed northeast replacing NC 181 to Morganton where it met back up with US 64.
Somebody noticed in 1947 or 1948 that mainline US 64's route through Old Fort was still not paved, so they routed it over 64-A. All of this is still mainline US 64 except the easternmost mile, which is now US 64 Business. This was the longest of all US 64-As at 55 miles.

| The route: | The 10th US 64-A was created about 1997 as a renumbering of mainline US 64, which received a freeway upgrade on new alignment. It began at the US 64-US 258-NC 111-NC 122 split in Princeville, and ran to east through Bethel and Robersonville.
About 2002, US 64-A was extended east through Everetts and around the original Williamston bypass, again replacing US 64 as it moved to new freeway. US 64-A now ends a little east of where mainline US 64 used to leave that bypass, near the Sweetwater Creek bridge. There is no US 13-A on the Bethel to Williamston section. This US 64-A was once original NC 90. NOTE - US 64A #8 and #9 are separate routes that end within a mile of each other on opposite sides of the Tar River. |
