McCabe

McCabe

McCabe, located 6 miles west of Humboldt, was founded in the mid-1890's. Thanks to the profitable McCabe gold mine, a small hospital and one-room school house were erected in 1896 and the population grew to about 600. The McCabe Mine was closed by 1913 and the town slowly died. Sporadic gold mining occurred throughout the years until the 1980's. Copper was mined at the site until 1993. Today, little remains of the town site and the mine and plant site have been reclaimed.
