Located near the town of Crystal,
this mill, also known as the Lost Horse or Dead Horse Mill, is
one of the most photographed landmarks in Colorado. The mill and
the town of Crystal were founded in the 1880's, as the area experienced
a silver boom. The town reached a population of around 400. The
mill had a water wheel which controlled a vertical shaft. This
powered a mechanical air compressor, which in turn, powered tools
for use in mines and a stamp mill located nearby. With the crash
of silver in the 1890's, Crystal's population dwindled and became
a ghost town. Today, a few old buildings and some summer residents
remain in the town.
