LAKESIDE CEMETERY

INSCRIPTIONS

Morris, Connecticut

This cemetery is located on the southwest corner of the intersection of Lakeside Rd (Route 109) and Stoddard Rd in Morris Conn. At the time of it’s creation the area was part of the Town of Litchfield.  For some stones that cannot be read, information is listed as in  "Litchfield and Morris Inscriptions" by Charles Thomas Payne published in 1905. All other information has been transcribed by Robert E. Morin from existing stones as of  Oct 7, 2008

This cemetery, referred to as “Footville Burying Ground”, in Payne’s book contains the following passage.:

Under date of December fifteenth, 1776, the following town vote in reference to the yard at Footville or West Morris appears upon the records at Litchfield. “Upon the Petition of sundry of the Inhabitants of the Southwest Part of Litchfield voted that the Select Men be empowered to buy of Mr. Thomas Waugh Half an acre of Land about Twenty Rods South of Joseph Waugh’s Dwelling House for the sum of Thirty Shillings for the Purpose of a public Burying Place for the Town of Litchfield. And in case said Thomas Waugh doth give & execute a Deed of said Half Acre of Land to the Inhabitants of the Town for the use of a public Burying Yard then said Thomas Waugh his Heirs & Assigns shall have good Right forever to inclose said Burying Yard and use it for Pasturing provided he or they shall keep & maintain convenient Bars for the People to pass and repass for the Purpose of burying their dead.” This bit of ground, lying some two miles west of Morris meeting House, and southwest of Bantam Lake, was conveyed to the town nearly ten years afterward on November thirteenth, 1786. Since then another half acre has been added. –  Charles T. Payne, Litchfield & Morris Inscriptions, 1902
