Surry County Marriage
Register, Reel 45, page 249 - Thomas B.
Seward married to Eliza Ann Lane on 6 Nov 1836 (The marriage bond was
issued on 16 Nov 1835, page 169. Thomas's name was given as Thomas
Batts Seward).
The 1850 Census in Surry
County, Virginia shows Thomas B. Seward
age 37, his wife Eliza Seward age 35, Albert(?) H. Seward age 13, John
L. Seward age 9, Samuel Seward age 8, Francis Seward age 6, James
Seward age 3, Martha Seward age 1, Lewis Riggins(?) age 18 - a black
male laborer, and Lawson George(?) age 10 - a black male.
The 1860 Census in Surry
County, Virginia shows Eliza A. Seward age
45, John age 19, Sam age 18, Frank (Could this be Francis?) age 16,
James age 14, Martha age 11, and Jos age 8.
John L. Seward is buried in
Moore's Swamp Baptist Church Cemetery
in Surry County, Virginia. The birth date on his headstone is
consistent with the ages of these two census entries. There is a Samuel
Seward, Frank Seward, and James Seward buried in that same cemetery
with birth dates that would be consistent with the census entries.
These are probably the graves of John L. Seward's brothers. There is no
indication that Albert, Martha, or Jos are buried there.
Death Register for Surry
County, Virginia lists Thomas B. Seward's
death date as 9 Sept, 1859. His parents are listed as Britten and Elizh
Seward. |

Cary Seward was born about 1778. Cary died in 1827.
I was not able to find a
will for Cary, but I did find the final
accounting of debts paid by his executor John P. Hopkins. A few points
of interest from this document:
Jany 1, 1828 To paid B. Lane
for dec's coffin 5.00 (This would indicate that Cary died late in
1827.)
Mar 15, 1828 To paid note to
James R Seward in part 13.10
Mar 28, 1828 To paid John
Lane appraising 1 day 1.00 (I point this one
out because Albridgeton's other son Thomas Batts Seward named one of
his sons John Lane Seward. [Cary's Nephew])
Nov 20, 1828 To paid balance
of note to Seward 6.30 |
