Pheasant and Quail

Native Hunts

While we will offer a limited number of controlled shoots, native pheasant (no pen raised birds, we don't need any) will be our focus and specialty during the upland game season.  During your hunt it will not be unusual to encounter several respectable coveys of quail, so stay on your toes and be ready for some fast paced wing shooting!

We provide our hunters access to ample, pheasant infested acreage with our staple ground primarily consisting of CRP habitat bordered by grain crops such as milo and wheat stubble.  The setup on many of our fields encourages us to begin the hunts at dawn's first light in the CRP grass where the birds roost, working our way up and down half mile sections, dissecting the ground using draws, natural breaks, and other land features to hold and flush the birds within shotgun range.  As the morning progresses, the pheasants move into the milo and wheat stubble to feed at which time we feel obliged to follow.

Traditionally we begin the season with little need to block fields unless the temperatures are unseasonably warm.  On milder mornings or as the season progresses, blocking becomes a much more productive method of hunting the ground when the birds have a greater propensity to run.

Daily bag and possession limits are controlled and regulated by the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks.  Recently the daily bag limit has been four rooster pheasants and eight quail per hunter.

The 2007 Hunting Regulations will be available September 1 at:

2007 Upland Game Forecast

Recent winter blizzards in Western Kansas have taken their toll on bird populations but our core property in Central Kansas has experienced a very mild winter.  The Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks will release their 2007 Upland Bird Forecast, by region, in mid-September at which time you may access it by clicking the following link:

Controlled Shoot

The primary appeals of a controlled shoot are the longer season, beginning September 1 and concluding March 31, and hunters are permitted to shoot both rooster and hen pheasants as well as quail and chukar.  In a controlled shoot, we liberate the number and species of birds chosen by the hunter prior to the days hunt.  Opportunities abound in a controlled shoot so bring plenty of shells.

Guided Hunts

We recommend that our guests consider our guided hunts, at least on their initial visit.  One of our licensed guides will accompany your party into the field and work our trained dogs on the birds for you.  The number of guides and dogs will vary proportionately with the size of your hunting party.  As with any type of hunting, our familiarity with the ground and the "typical" habits of the birds will aid in the success of your hunt.

Non-guided Hunts

If you are a traditionalist and enjoy watching your own dogs work as much as we do ours then this is the hunt for you.  Beyond the obvious advantage they provide, holding live birds and helping find the dead and "not so dead" ones, having your own canine hunting companion sharing the field with you provides an experience requiring no explanation.

We provide you with directions to the ground as well as boundary descriptions and then let you hunt.  If you choose a non-guided hunt we invite you to bring your first year dogs as well as your seasoned veteran.  Nothing helps a dog's development like early exposure to birds and quality time in the field.
