Birkoff works the sophisticated computer and communications systems in Section One, although in what capacity isn’t totally clear. He appears to have some managerial discretion over the other people in his department (FL, OTB) and to report directly to Madeline and Operations. His duties seem many and varied: running simulations, building new programs, decoding enemy files, generating computer-simulated voices (Gray), compiling intel, and providing live running verbal guidance during missions. |
For almost a decade, Birkoff
has lived inside Section (Noise), rarely leaving except on missions.
He knows nothing of how he got into Section other than what Walter has
told him, for he has no memory of life before Section (SFTD).
Walter has told Birkoff that his mother Lisa was an operative, and while
his twin brother Jason was allowed to leave Section, he was not.

Birkoff’s closest association is with Walter. Walter has proved to be a confidant (CAM), a fellow conspirator (GOH, SID), and sometimes rival (TPR) but always a friend. Although there seems to be a friendly give-and-take between Nikita and Birkoff, and on occasion Birkoff has done favors for her of his own volition (LFM), it is for Walter that Birkoff seems willing to lay it all on the line (OBT). |
