SPFP Mourns the Victims of War

On January 6th, 2007 SPFP gathered at the corner of Iron and Santa Fe after marching the two mile trek from Kansas Wesleyan University.  A flag drapped coffin was carried in the procession and mourners gathered on the corners reading the names of 3005 US soldiers killed in this illegal war.  Also read were representative names of the 650,000 + Iraqi civilians killed.  During the ceremonies a KC-135 flew right over our heads, we think to commemorate the loss as well.

SPFP Mourns the Victims of War

On August 20, SPFP gathered at the corner of 9th and Crawford St to bring attention to the cost of war. July appears to be the deadliest month of the occupation for Iraqi civilians, according to the figures provided by the Health Ministry and Baghdad morgue. An average of over 110 Iraqi's were killed each day in July, the total number provided is up 9% from June... nearly double the toll in January. Names of many of the civilians were read aloud, we sang songs... we mourn as we call for an end to the hostilities. There is no organized effort to name all victims of the war. Only when all have been identified and duly recorded can there be any talk of respecting their memory. To all who knew and loved these individuals, we offer our condolences. Violence is not the answer, peace is possible.

Independence Day March Down Santa Fe

Around 18 SPFP members started a march in the yard of KWU in celebration of Independence Day. The group treked a little over 2 miles, ending with a gathering at City County building, downtown Salina.

Troops Home Fast

Kansans join in solidarity with the Troops Home Fast movement in Washington DC. Salina People For Peace organized a July 3 feast before the fast in front of the United Building, downtown Salina. Eight members committed to at least a 24 hour fast, some will go longer.

The general public was overwhelmingly supportive of our action. Many honked with thumbs up as they drove past, others waved and gave us the peace sign. We respect the few negative responses expressed, knowing this is what makes America a democracy.

Third Anniversary of the Illegal Invasion and Occupation of Iraq

Despite the freezing weather on March 19, 2006, nearly 50 peace activists gather on the corner of Crawford St and Ohio St. We collected over 76 LBS of food to donate to Emergency-Aid Food Bank to demonstrate the positive action that Salina People for Peace is all about. Local action. Global Solutions.

Salina mourns the loss of the 2000th US Soldier

On October 25, 2005 local residents gather on the corner of Crawford St and Ohio St to stand vigil in rememberance of all the victims of war. The candlelight vigil did last over an hour as we called out the names of the US service men and women, their age and home state. A powerful way to remember those who gave all.

Close the School of Americas

This years' Vigil at the gates of Fort Benning, Georgia (November 18-20) was the largest gathering to close the School of the Americas to date. Thanks to everyone who made it happen. It fueled people's commitment and energized thousands from across the Americas. We need to keep up the pressure to change oppressive U.S. foreign policy, to shut down the SOA and the racist system of violence and repression that it represents.
