for you to know about these programs, benefits and services available
to you and your family.

From its beginning, The American Legion has considered its first obligation the care of those who
have served on active duty, the war disabled and the surviving spouses and children of those who died as
a result of military service. There are numerous Federal and State Programs that provide financial support,
medical care and rehabilitation, and social and economic readjustment services to veterans.

VA Disability Compensation: Is payable tax-free for disease or injury incurred in or aggravated by military service. You will need to show evidence of treatment in service or onset of the problem within one year of seperation or discharge. You should request a copy of your medical records before you are released from active duty. A claim may be be filed at ant time, but claims filed within one year of discharge will be retroactive to your date of discharge. Claims filed after one year will be effective on the date of claim. It is recommended that you appoint an authorized Veterns Service Organization, such as The American Legion, to represent you before a VA in disabilty claims because the laws are complicated. VA Medical Care: In addition to entitlement for VA health care because of service connected conditions or other enrollment criteria, veterans who serve on active duty in a theater of combat operations during a period of war (OIF/OEF) after November 11, 1998 or in combat against a hostile force during a period of hostilities are eligible for hospital care, medical services, and a nursing home care for a period of two years from the date of discharge. The VA will provide care if there is insufficient medical evidence that the condition is related to combat service.
Reservists and members of the National Guard are eligible for this free care.

VA prioritizes veternas seeking care and your local VA medical facility may have a wait list for an initial appointment with a doctor. If you have health concerns that you think are related to your combat service, seek an evaluation at your local VA mediacal facility.

VA Dental Treatment: If you did not receive a complete dental check-up and treatment within 90 days prior to your discharge, you may be eligible for this service from your VA. Your DD-214 will note if this treatment was provided. You must apply to VA within 90 days of seperation. You may apply at any time for treatment of a service-connected dental injury or disbility.

Vocational Rehabilitation: The aim of VA VocRehab is to make the disabled veteran employable. Veterans who are 10% service disabled with a serious employment handicap may be eligible for VA VocRehan. If you are pending a medical seperation and are rated at least 20% disabled, you may apply while still in the service. Apply to the VA Regional Office in your State.

VA Service-Disabled Life Insurance (RH): Veterans with a service-connected disability who are in otherwise good health may apply to VA for up to $10,000 in RH life insurance at standard rates. Veterans who are 100% service disabled may apply for a wavier of premiums and additional coverage. You must apply within two years of the date you were awarded service connection.

Servicemembers Group Life Insurance (SGLI) Active duty service members are automatically insured for $250,000 under SGLI. Premiums are deducted from your pay or may be paid directly by you to the service branch. Free coverage continues for 120 days following seperation. Totally disabled service members may have a one-year extension of SGLI at no charge. Family Servicemembers Group Life Insurance (FSGLI) is esentially a rider that provides up to $100,000 coverage on the Servicemembers spouse and $10,000 on each dependent child.

Veterans Group Life Insurance (VGLI)SGLI may be converted to Veterans Group Life Insurance within 120 days of seperation in 5-year renewable coverage periods without evidence of insurability. After 121 days and for up to one year SGLI may be converted to VGLI, but the veteran must submit evidence of insurability and an initial premium. VGLI is automatically converted from SGLI after expiration of the one-year disability extension.

VA Readjustment Counseling Service (RCS): Readjustment counseling for veterans who served in a combat theater is available at over 200 Vet Centers located in all 50 states, DC, Puerto Rico, Guam and the U.S. Virgin Islands. RCS is designed to help combat veterans in readjusting to civilian life and can include help with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), military sexual trauma and bereavement counseling for families of service members who were killed in action. RCS Vet Center staff provide individual, group and family counseling, medical referral, homeless veteran services, VA benefit referral and referral to non-VA services.

VA Educational Assistance The Montgomery GI Bill (MGIB) pays monthly cash benefits to veterans who qualify, including members of the Reserves and National Guard who were activated under Federal orders.MGIB may be used for college, graduate school, vocational and apprenticeship training, some correspondence courses, flight school and other training. VA education laws are complex.

VA Home Loan Guarantee: VA home loan guarantees are made to servicemembers, veterans, and reservists and unremarried surviving spouses for the purchase of homes, condominiums and manufactured homes and for refinancing existing loans.
