Land Office Military Certificates

Description of Collection

Land Office Military Certificates are printed forms on which the names of Revolutionary War officers, soldiers and sailors are filled in as well as the details of their service in the State or Continental line. In order to receive bounty lands for Revolutionary War service, a soldier or sailor must have served continuously for at least three years in a Virginia or Continental unit. Service in the militia did not count. Once proof of qualifying military service was established and a claim was approved in the Governor's Office, the governor issued a certificate authorizing the Land Office to issue a warrant. The warrant specified the amount of lands to be received and directed the surveyor of lands to set aside that quantity of land in the western reserves of Kentucky and Ohio. Certificates verify Revolutionary War service but not necessarily land ownership since many soldiers or their families sold the warrants to investors or speculators. The bound registers in the Land Office also contain the essential information from the certificates. Information concerning the disposition of the warrants is located in the state records of Kentucky and Ohio. The cards also contain the military certificate number which is used to research the land grant in Kentucky and Ohio.

This census record is from Sabine District, Texas for the year 1835.  This may, or may not, be West Allen's brother William P. Melton, and his mother Elizabeth (Allen) Melton. The age for Elizabeth and W. K. is exactly correct,  but Levana is not the wife I show for him. Thus, it seems that Levana was his second wife. The difference in W.K. and Levana's age (40 vs. 20) also tends to support this.

Va. 1754 d. 1842 Greenville Co. SC, daughter Gideon Moon and widow of ? Stone. Among their children was Ann Peyton Lynch b. Va. 1788 d. 1878 Noxubee County, MS. m. 1st Micajah Cochran 2nd Peyton Cochran. Relationship of Micajah to Peyton not known. Some say cousins, this could be mistake; perhaps Micajah was Peyton's uncle. In 1800 Micajah Cochran and family in Pendleton Dist. S.C. by about 1815 Ann Peyton Lynch (Cochran) was m. to Peyton Cochran. Micajah must have died ca 1810-1815. Children of Ann Peyton Lynch and 1st husband Micajah: Lucinda m. William Lawson, William L. b. 1805 SC m. 3 times; Susanna Melton, Susan B. Brown and Martha Emaline Harpole. William L. lived at various times Greene and Bibb Co., Ala. and Noxubee Co. MS., Samuel H. Cochran and Polly H. Cochran. Children by her 2nd husband Peyton Cochran, perhaps d. in Perry Co. Ala between 1830-1840 were: John Moon Cochran, Elizabeth, Ann Peyton Cochran m. George Hardin in Noxubee Co. MS., Nathaniel P., Harriet, Albert M., Adalene W. m. Franklin M. Adams in Noxubee Co. MS. and Micajah Rufus. I have some information on some of these people, but need a great deal more. I am especially hopeful of learning the relationship of Micajah Cochran to Peyton Cochran and the antecedents of both. Does anyone know who Peyton Cochran's siblings were?

LaVelle Henderson writes:

Thomas Gary (Uncle Tom) Melton b 1 Apr 1801 or 06 Al d 25 Dec 1872 Washington Co., TX m 8 Nov 1827 to Martha Anderson (Patsy) Bryant b.14 Apr 1810 d 28 Nov Washington Co., TX

He was listed as guardian of the Bryant children before he left AL, therefore, if Martha was 12 when her father died and 17 when she married, Alexander  must have died in 1822. Thomas Gary left Al in 1830. He possibly lived in Madison Co., Ms and at Sharon, MS. Perhaps he came to TX in the 1860's. He once owned a business in New Orleans.   As you will see this family has lots of missing links.

MARTHA A MELTON Estate:

Now comes Lyddleton SMITH as Admr. of said estate and makes known to the court that there is no money on hand with which to pay costs of court and expenses of adm, and no personal property on hand which he can sell and raise money.

That there is a lot in the town of Washington with dilapidated improvements thereon, situated on the East side of Main St. known as the Hotel property which said lot belongs to said estate and is the only property belonging to said estate to which will bring ready money. Wherefore he asks for an order of court to sell said lot and improvements on the best terms he can on a credit till Jan 1st 1875 for the purpose of raising money to pay off the cost of court and expenses of adms, and other preferred claims against said estate and for all other needful orders. Lyddleton SMITH, Admr, per Breedlove & Ewing Attys. Hotel known as old Roberts Hotel sold for $50.00.
