Sorry to take so long in answering you e-mail. Glad to hear that
you knew Chief Massy. There were a couple of others I vaguely
remembered, I think their names were Vicory and Engles, not
sure on the spelling.
If you left the ship in January 1953, we must have had an overlap.
After ET school at Great Lakes (class of August 1951), I went to
Key West Florida for Advanced Undersea Weapons School. It must have
lasted at least six months, so I guess I arrived on board about early
1952. The ship went to dry dock in Vallejo for several months.
We had the barnacles scraped off the hull, also had the clams removed
from the salt water pipe lines. Then they removed the five-inch gun
from the fantail and replaced it with a helicopter deck. It turned
out to be the best place to acquire a tan. They also removed some of
the side plating from the 05 deck and replaced it with canvas,
apparently we were a little top heavy. After we returned to San Diego,
we had a shake down cruse with a large convoy, shelled San Clemente
Island, then the Marines landed and captured it. All of this was on TV.
I do have some pictures of a battle ship firing on the island.

The Korean War was over, so they let us out a couple of months
before our enlistment was up. I got out the second of June 1954.
That is it for now, will try to send a couple of pictures.
