Ham Radio Service ...a Lifeline!
Jack talks on his ham radio outside the operations center at Hunterdale Fire Station in Franklin Virginia during the 1999 flood disaster. Many ham radio operators including Jack volunteered between 12 and 18 hours each day to help Franklin residents and local officials communicate. Most other regular communication services were disrupted. Although emergency procedures had been planned to cover a crises like Hurricane Floyd, many Franklin residences were supprised by the speed of advancing water levels.
One resident said he had been around for nearly 60 years and this was worst flooding by far that he had ever seen. When phones stopped working, volunteers like Jack started their support. Ham operators stayed in constant communication with local emergency management officials, firefighters, police officers, the National Guard, State Police and other agencies. Jack was always ready to quietly go to work in such situations and stay until the job was done. Amateur Radio with all its activities was a very important aspect of Jacks life in recent years.

Son Marc Assumes Jack's Callsign |
As a tribute to his father, Marc applied for Jack's call sign KF4POD. Like his father Marc is an active licensed amateur radio operator having been assigned the call KF4PWU some years ago. The FCC has processed the request and is in process of reassigning Jack's call to Marc. Marc is one of Newport News' Finest as a member of the Newport News Police Department for over 18 years. Marc has worked in just about all types of assignments during that period, including the Patrol Division, the Investigations Bureau, the Tactical Team and Marine Patrol in the James River and related areas. Marc currently is a Master Police Officer assigned to the Planning Division involved in developing policies to meet current and future police department challanges. Marc is very proud of his father and will no doubt carry on in Jack's proud tradition.
